Thoughts please?

It appears that our biggest hurdle at the moment is figuring out our wedding day timeline. At first, we were thinking about having a luncheon reception, but after talking to the event planner at our reception site, it seems that this would be more complicated than we had anticipated. It would mean having a 9:30am ceremony and leaves us with very little time for photos. I can deal with the early morning ceremony, but I don't want to be rushed for photos. Alternatively, we could take photos the day before. This would be fine, except it means I'd have to get my hair and make-up done twice? And what about the bridal party? Or would the photos only be of me and P, and wedding party/family photos will be taken the day of the wedding?

Or, we can opt for a later ceremony time and a dinner reception. But, this option is also more complicated than we thought. The two churches we are looking at offer 1:30 and 2pm as their latest options for a wedding ceremony. Assuming our ceremony will take 30 mins, this leaves us with a fairly large time gap between the end of the ceremony and the beginning of our cocktail hour. Which makes me wonder: what will our guests do during this time gap? Well, good thing Honolulu traffic pretty much guarantees that transportation time will be about 30 minutes, but it still leaves us with a gap of more than 1 hour. While this timeline would allow plenty of time for photos, I am concerned about our guests. I know, it's our day and it shouldn't matter what other people think, but I am not the type of bride who is "all about me" and "too bad for my guests". I want to make sure that we keep our guests happy and that everyone has a good time, while also making sure that P and I enjoy our big day.

I'd like to hear from you. What are your thoughts and/or experiences with gaps between a ceremony and reception?

Dress Shopping Adventure

2 days, 4 bridal salons and countless dresses later...I found THE dress!!!

It really is the case that "mom knows best". I am so grateful that I have been fortunate enough to spend the last 2 days dress shopping with my mom. Her years of sewing experience coupled with the fact that we have the same body shape, pretty much makes her the expert in knowing what kinds of gowns would look good on me. I knew that I would not be able to buy a dress without her.

On Thursday, we started our wedding dress shopping adventure at a small, locally owned bridal salon. As we were looking through the racks, my mom pulled a dress that caught her eye. Being the idiot that I sometimes can be, I didn't pay much attention and brushed off the choice with a quick "eeeehh". I ended up trying on several gowns, none of which really jumped out at me. The last dress I tried on was my mom's first pick. It was the best dress so far, but I wasn't totally in love, despite the fact that my mom loved the dress and everyone agreed that it looked best on me.

Our next stop was another small, locally owned boutique. I won't go into much detail, but the bottom line is that I wasn't impressed with the store, the customer service or the selection of dresses. I tried on one dress and left. I think we spent 20 minutes there, making it our shortest consultation.

On Friday, our first stop was David's Bridal. Unfortunately, none of the dresses really wowed me. In fact, I had a hard time trying on the dresses because none of them were in petite and so they didn't fit well. It was difficult to imagine what a petite size might look like.

Our next stop was to yet another small, locally owned boutique. I went in with high expectations because they were having a trunk show with one of my favorite designers. I tried on a beautiful ball gown with a beaded waistband and pockets and totally fell in love. But for all of the pros to the dress, there were several cons and I could not justify the price (which was a little over my budget). I left this store feeling somewhat defeated and wondering if I'd ever find THE dress. My mom suggested going back to the boutique we had first visited the day before to re-look at the dress I liked there.

Best suggestion ever. After trying on so many gowns that weren't quite right, she thought that perhaps I'd see things a little differently. I tried on her original pick and fell in love. When the owner mentioned that she could alter the dress to make at sweetheart neckline, I knew it was a done deal. I was sold. It also helps that the dress was on sale for a price that we could not pass up. I am so excited about this dress and cannot wait to wear it!!! :) Mom really does know best. Her very first pick ended up being the ONE.

Since P does not want to see the dress until our wedding day, I will not be posting any pictures of it or giving any descriptions. But if you want to see a picture of it, just shoot me an email.
